Mathematics is highly valued at Western CofE Primary School where it is seen as an essential life skill. The school is committed to ensuring that children have a positive and meaningful experience of maths enabling them to understand relationships and patterns in number shape and space as well as in their everyday lives. An emphasis is placed on the ‘mastery’- of factual, procedural and conceptual knowledge, in addition to the development and flexible use of a range of mental strategies. Combined, these foster the growth of successful mathematicians. The curriculum presents pupils with rich and enjoyable experiences enabling them to secure essential knowledge and skills whilst also providing them with many opportunities to use and apply their mathematical expertise across the curriculum, when solving real life problems and mathematical investigations.
